Japanese aid to Sri Lanka fell sharply by 94.39 per cent (Japanese Yen 24.4 billion/Rs 42.7 billion) to Yen 1.4 billion (Rs 2.5 billion), 2020 over 2019, data found on the Japan International Cooperation Agency’s (JICA’s) 2021 Annual Report released this week showed. This dip was as a result of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa cancelling the Yen 30,040 million (Rs 52.5 billion), Japanese-funded Colombo Light Rail Project which was to be implemented in 2020.
